1 It shall be prerogative of the examiners to decide on pattern(s).
2. Technique demonstration shall be performed in the fellow manner:
  • Start from 'kyorugi chunbi' position facing the examiner
  • Execute technique towards the direction of the examiner that is, A to B.
  • Move forward with each kick.
  • Maintain 'kyorugi chunbi' position after each kick.
  • Turn to face the opposite direction after the first series of kicks and adopt 'kyorugi chunbi' position.
  • Execute technique in that direction - that is, B to A.
  • Maintain 'kyorugi chunbi' position after each kick.
  • Turn to face the examiner after the second series of kicks and take up 'Kyorugi chunbi' position.
  • Each step will be done according to command.
3. Candidates are required to demonstrate only hand techniques.
4. Candidates need to show only leg counter-attack techniques.
5. One candidate shall assume the role of an attacker while his partner takes the part of a defender. Both candidates will adopt the 'kyorugi chunbi' position and face each other.

The attacker will first execute a front kick and the defender shall demonstrate his ability to handle the move with an apporpriate counter-attack. Both the attacker and the defender shall return to 'kyorugi chunbi' position on completion of the action. The attacker will then proceed with the next technique.
The mandatory kicks, which shall be executed with the right leg and in the order they are given, are:
  • Front kick
  • Turning kick
  • Side kick
  • Back kick
  • Reverse kick

The defender shall adjust his position according to the attacker.

After the candidates have done their respective parts, they will switch roles.

6. Candidiates will be given one minute to perform the imaginary sparring. They will be required to demonstrate a variety of kicking and puncing techniques and footwork.
7. A handmitt will be used as a target. Candidates will be required to kick twice - once each with the left and right legs.
8. Two handmitts will be held by an assistant. Candidates will kick or punch the target accordingly.
9. Candidates will be required to kick or punch a handmitt while moving backwards.
10. This requirement is similar to the 1-step sparring assessment at the lower grade except the kicks are not predetermined. The attacker has the liberty to employ whatever techniques he likes. Please see explanatory note number 5.
11. 4 handmitts will be placed at various positions which will be decided by the examiner. Candidates shall use the right kicking techniques to hit the targets.
12. The test will comprise ten general questions on Taekwondo and its development.
13. Candidates will be given ten minutes to demonstrate their specialised skills. The alloted time excludes preparation for the demonstration. Candidates may demonstrate special kicking, punching, sparring, breaking or self-defence techniques. A combination of the various items is permissible.
14. The thesis has to be submitted within three month of the practical test. Candidates have the option of selecting the topic. However, the dissertation must reflect the maturity and the level of technical attainment of the candidate. The grading is considered as lapse if the thesis is not received within the period.
15. Candidiates shall perform the footwork as required by their respected grades. They will be given 20 to 30 seconds to do so.

Grade 1 and higher candidates are free to show their perferred footwork.

The footwork is to be performed smoothly on a 'kyorugi chunbi' stance. There should be equal distribution of body weight and balance in muscle relaxation and tension. Balance must be maintained at all times. Candidates will lose 10 points if they falter during the performance. 5 points will deducted for 'stiffness'.

16. From grades 10 to 5, focuser (handmitt) will be used to assess the effectiveness of the execution. Arm shield (Hard target) will be used from grades 4 and higher. For high-section reverse kick required for grade 2, focuser will be used. Each candidate will be required to do 5 repetitions with each leg for each technique.

Grade 1 and higher candidates have the choice to demonstrate their favourite techniques.

Points will be deducted for every kick that is not executed accurately and powerfully. The explosive 'sound' will be used as a gauge of the impact. The expectation of the examiner will be based on the size, sex, grade, degree of difficulty of techniques and type of techniques of candidates.

The number of points deducted will be used based on the total possible score for this component. For example, the maximum technique score for Grade 10 is 60 points. Therefore each kick is worth 6 points.

17. Candidates will be given 15 seconds to shadow spar. They are free to demonstrate any kicks they wish. However, all kicks or punches should follow one after another. The pause should not be more than 2 seconds. Any violation of this requirement will result in the deduction of 20 points. 3 points will be deducted for every kick below the waist.
18. For target sparring, two focusers (handmitt) will be used for grades 10 to 3. For grades 2 and 1, candidates will have to perform with air shield(hard target).

Any taekwondo member may be appointed to hold the target.

The target should be placed in different position after each kick or punch. Each execution should follow the next. The pause between techniques should not be more than 2 seconds. 20 points for grade 7 candidates and 10 points for the rest would be deducted for failure to meet this requirement.

The time allocated for each candidate to perform is as follows.

  • 20 seconds (grades 7 to 1)
  • 25 seconds (1st dan)
  • 30 seconds (2nd dan & higher)

Within the period, the target must be hit solidly at least 5 times. Failure to do so will result in the candidates losing 20 points for grade 7 candidates and 10 points for the rest.

The more kicks and punches the candidates execute accurately and powerfully, the more points they will get.

19. Candidates will be required to wear full gear during free sparring. The requirements will be as follows.
  • Grades 6 to 2 - 1 round of 2 minutes
  • Grade 1 - 2 round s of 2 minutes each with 30 seconds break in between rounds.
  • 1st & 2nd poom/dan - 2 matches of 2 rounds of 2 minutes with 30 seconds break in between rounds
  • 3rd poom/dan to 5th dan - 2 matches of 3 rounds of 2 minutes with 30 seconds break in netween rounds

While the instructors are responsible for the matching of candidates under their charge, the Grading Department will help to ensure that the sparring condidtion is equitable based on age and weight of candidates.

Candidates who fail this segment of the grading will not be considered for promotion.

To pass, candidates must chalked up at least

  • 1 point (grades 6 to 2)
  • 2 point (Grade 1)
  • 3 points (1st dan) per match
  • 4 points (2nd dan & higher) per match

The more points the candidates score, the higher will be the marks awarded.

Both candidates will fail if the examiner reckons that the match has been fixed. They will be warned once before the decision is taken.
