Accreditation Accorded To 13 Coaches
13 coaches locked, threw and kicked their partners on 19 November 2006 at the National Training Centre to impress the assessors. They had to do that because they were undergoing the unarmed combat accreditation assessment.
Candidates were given 15 minutes to display their unarmed combat skills including defence against an assailant using various weapons. After that, they were assessed on their theoretical knowledge of self-defence.
Most of the candidates could perform reasonably well. However, they found it challenging when it came to answering the questions.
The oldest participant, seventy-year-old Mr Ong Ban Guan, proved that age was of no barrier. He could still execute a mean throw and take a bad fall. Although he could not outperform his younger counterparts, he certainly could draw some admiration from them for being so courageous and sporting.
Mr Milan Kwee, STF President, who witnessed the assessments conducted by Mr Lim Teong Chin and Mr Chin Khee Shin, shared his observations with the participants at the end of the session. While he was impressed with some of the performances, he felt that some of the techniques shown were not practical.
Mr. Kwee should know as he was trained in unarmed combat too!
The results: All 13 coaches were accredited their respective levels ranging from Level 1 to 3.
A Spectacular Show
On 3 November 2006, more than 1,500 students and their teachers from Catholic High School gathered at the school hall to witness a taekwondo demonstration. They greeted the visitors from Gwangjingu Taekwondo Association with thunderous applause.
The warm welcome seemed to have inspired the 60 young Korean demonstrators who took to the stage to show of their skills. Each performance drew oohs, aahs and a lot of excited cheers from the crowd.
Mr Park Chang-sik, the head of team, was visibly pleased with his charges. With each successful item, he smiled, nodded and clapped.
For the students and teachers, it was a visual treat. They found the performance unbelievable, fantastic and awesome. These were the words used by them to describe their feelings of the demonstration.
The half-hour demonstration ended with an exchange of gifts between Mr. Park and Mdm Chua Puay Eng, the Head of Department (Chinese).
Mr Milan Kwee, President of the Singapore Taekwondo Federation, hosted a dinner for the team officials on 5 November before they left for home.
Last Course Attracts 31 Participants
The last in the series of poomsae courses was successfully conducted on 11 November 2006. 31 participants attended the course.
A few qualified coaches from the other courses joined them to reinforce what they had already learned. Among them was Leong Yun Yuet. She showed why she was selected as the best trainee in her course. Her willingness to learn more was admirable.
She said: “I don’t want to miss anything. I am glad that I come today as I have a clearer picture of a lot more of the poomsae movements.”
“I appreciate what the course conductors are doing to upgrade the skills of coaches.”
Sharing Yun Yuet’s sentiments, Patricia Ong said: “I would like to thank the Federation and all the instructors. They have sacrificed all their weekends just to ensure that we are well informed with the latest development of poomsae.”
Like all good coaches would do, Patricia said that she would pass down the knowledge to her students and look forward to further upgrade herself.
As usual, it was difficult for the course conductors to select the best trainees. After some deliberations, they gave the awards to Jeremy Poh Boon Chai and Tan Wan Ting.

1. Submission for the Grading can only be at the STF office during office hours.
2. Please ensure that ALL grading cards are properly completed and duly endorsed. A recent photograph of the candidate must be attached.
3. For ALL candidates who are going for Brown 1 & above, please have the following documents during submission:
a. Candidate’s grading card
b. 1 photocopy of the candidate’s Identity Card (front & back) / Birth Certificate (for candidate below age of 12)
c. 2 recent IC / passport photographs of the candidate
d. Form B (duly completed)
Submission will not be accepted if any of the documents is not available or, for Form B, partially completed.
4. Submission will not be accepted if candidate fails to produce any of the documents mentioned above.
5. The last day of submission is on 14 December 2006 (Thursday). Any submission after this date will be considered as LATE SUBMISSION.
6. Late submissions for candidates taking Brown 1 & above are to be done within two (2) weeks from 15 December 2006 (Friday). Submission beyond the grace period of two (2) weeks WILL NOT be accepted. An administrative fee will be charged accordingly for late submission. The charges are as follows:

7. An administrative fee of SGD 5.00 will be charged for late submission of candidates taking all other grades except Brown 1 & above.
8. A roll call will be taken at 1.30pm for Brown 1 (Senior) candidates going for 1st dan and 2.30pm for 1st dan , 1st poom and higher candidates. Those who miss the roll call will be considered as ABSENT or LATECOMERS. Latecomers will not be graded.
9. Candidates are to turn up in proper dress code (as stipulated by the STF) for the grading. Candidates who fail to comply with the dress code will not be allowed to take the grading.
10. Supplementary Grading can only be conducted two (2) weeks before or after the Centralised Grading and will be subjected to the approval of the Grading Department.
11. Candidates will be taking the grading at their own risk and therefore will not hold the Federation, the Grading Department or anyone so concerned, responsible for any injuries, accidents or mishaps that may befall on them during the course of the grading.

Unarmed Combat Programme Accreditation Assessment
The accreditation assessment will be held on 19 November 2006 at the National Training Centre from 9.00am. Candidates have been informed of the timing.
The assessment will comprise the following:
- Interview to determine your understanding and knowledge of unarmed combat.
- Performance of unarmed combat skills
– Locks and holds (Level 1)
– Throws and breakfall techniques (Level 2)
– Defence against an assailant with short stick (Level 2)
– Defence against an assailant with knife or long pole (Level 3)
– Self-defence techniques in different situations (Instructor Level).

Certificate Presentation Ceremony
All successful candidates in the poomsae coach courses are invited to attend the certificate presentation on Sunday 26 November 2006 at 9am at the National Training Centre to collect their certificates.
The dress code is ‘dobok’. For those who are driving, it will be free parking on that day.
Food and drinks will be served to celebrate the success of the series of course and encourage networking and interaction among coaches and officials of the Federation.
Dr Lee Chee Wee, CEO of LYNK Biotechnologies Pte Ltd, will be giving a short presentation on the effect of martial sport on joints. This topic should be of interest to coaches who have their students’ welfare at heart.
Certificate recipients are requested to confirm their attendance with Jolene or Theresa at 63451491 by 17 November 2006.
Coach Course Over Subscribed
The poomsae coach courses held on 4 and 5 November received overwhelming response. As a result of this, the STF decided to organize an additional course on 11 November 2006 to accommodate the extra participants.
Said the Coaching Coach Chairman Wong Liang Ming: “It shows that our coaches are not contented in remaining status quo. They want to keep abreast of the latest development and continue to be effective coaches. Their attitude is good for their students and the sport.”
The two courses held over the weekends saw 74 coaches qualify for the various poomsae coach levels.
The best trainees for the two courses were:

Certificates of successful participants would be presented at a ceremony which had been scheduled to be held on 26 November 2006 at 9am at the NTC.
Poomsae Coach Course
The Federation would like to put on record its thanks to all affiliates for their support of the series of courses conducted to qualify poomsae coaches and upgrade coaches’ poomsae skills.
In view of overwhelming response, the Federation has decided to organize one more course as part of the series. It will be held on Saturday 11 November 2006 from 1pm to 9pm at the National Training Centre.
Registration is now open. The application form is attached.

Poomsae Coach Course Well Attended
106 blackbelt holders participated in the first four of a series of six Poomsae Coach Courses organized by the Federation. The courses were specially conducted not only to familiarize them with the latest development in poomsae but also to qualify them as poomsae coaches.
Of the 106 participants, only 13 failed to meet the minimum requirements. The rest did well to obtain the poomsae coaching qualification ranging Levels 1 (Provisional) to 3.
The best trainees for the courses were

Those who were not successful in the courses were required to go for remedial training and retest if they still aspired to obtain the qualification.
