Message Of Condonlence

0

The Management Committee and staff of the Singapore Taekwondo Federation and all taekwondo coaches and members were shocked and saddened by the untimely death of Coach Steven Tay Boon Choon.

He passed away after he lost his ‘fight’ against complications caused by gastric band surgery.

The local taekwondo community felt a sense of loss as Coach Tay was not only a good coach but also a nice guy – obliging, friendly and humble.

We extend our condolences to the bereaved family and relatives of Coach Tay.  Our prayers are with all of them.

Unarmed Combat Programme

0

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) will be organizing an Unarmed Combat Programme (Level 1) in September 2006.  Details of the course are attached.

The course is part of the unarmed combat programme aimed primarily to promote the art which has lost its significance over the years because of the emphasis of taekwondo as a sport.  The other objectives include

– the development of unarmed combat proficiency in the participants; and
– the enhancement of their understanding and knowledge of taekwondo as a martial art. There will be 4 levels – Level 1 to 3 and Instructor Level – for the programme.  It offers holders of the certificates exemption from the self-defence component required for the promotion test.

Those with instructor level qualification may conduct self-defence course with the recognition of the STF.

In recognition of current blackbelt holders who possess unarmed combat skills or have adequate knowledge to be placed at the various levels, the STF accepts applications for accreditation.  A test will be conducted by at least two senior members who have been qualified by the Asian Taekwondo Union.  The test will comprise practical demonstration and interview.

An accreditation fee of $40.00 (Level 1), $60.00 (Level 2), $80.00 (Level 3) or $120.00 (Instructor Level) is payable.

Taekwondo Coaching

0

The Taekwondo Coaching (Level 1) Course attracted 72 participants from 31 affiliates.  It was conducted over two weekends on 24 and 25 June and 1 and 2 July 2006 at the National Training Centre.  The tests – theory and practical – were held on 9 July 2006While 2 participants had no comment, the rest agreed that the panel of course conductors comprising the following were proficient.

– Mr G Rajendran
– Mr Ng Keng Boon
– Mr Tan Cheng Hui
– Mr Tan Kok Heng
– Ms Wong Liang Ming
– Mr Yeo Stanley

Generally, all the participants found the course useful for various reasons.

Said a grateful participant, Wayne Koo:  “I have benefited from the course and am impressed with STF’s continued effort to instill taekwondo spirit and tradition.  These values, I feel, have been lost in most dojang.”

All successful candidates will be required to complete 3 months (twice a week) or 6 months (once a week) of coaching attachment before they are awarded their certificates.

5 Taekwondo Exponents Attend WTF-Organised Seminars

0

The World Taekwondo Federation invited participation from all its member national associations in the following:

  •  6th International Poomsae Referee Seminar (24 to 27 June 2006)
  •  2nd International Poomsae Seminar for Coaches (28 and 29 June 2006)

The events were held at Korea National Sport University, Seoul, Korea.  While the referee seminar attracted 95 participants from 22 countries, the seminar for coaches was attended by 78 participants from 24 countries.

(L to R: Tan Cheng Hui, Lee Thiam Huat, Lim Teong Chin, Mr Choue Chungwon (President WTF), RA Jeyaraman, Chow Pak Hoong)

5 senior taekwondo exponents from Singapore attended both the seminars.  They were Lee Thiam Huat, Chow Pak Hoong, Tan Cheng Hui, R. Jeyaraman and Lim Teong Chin.

(3rd from left: Mr. Lee Sung Soo (former Singapore National Coach)

The seminars covered poomsae competition rules and interpretation, the principles of poomsae movements and a lot of practice.

Our participants found the scoring system which was based on accuracy and presentation fascinating.  Electronic controls were used to record penalties.

The final scores of all judges would be flashed on the board at the end of the performance.  It was interesting to note that although the scores of the judges were not far apart they might not be necessarily correct.

The next seminar on poomsae would probably be held before the World Poomsae Taekwondo Championships scheduled for 4 to 6 Septemtber 2006.

Ali Pourtaheri, a blackbelt holder from United Kingdom, trained with the national squad from 25 June to 2 July 2006 at the National Training Centre.  He was an overseas guest of the Singapore Taekwondo Federation. While our players were impressed with his humility and discipline, Ali was touched by the warm hospitality extended to him.  What’s more, he enjoyed the training and picked up some sparring tips from the national coach, Wong Liang Ming.

Said Wong: “Ali can go far in the sport.  He was certainly keen to learn as much as possible within the short time he was with us.  I like his training attitude and wish him all the best in his endeavour to excel in the sport.”

Ali took home with him not only fond memories of his experiences at the National Training but also gifts from the Federation.
