A Gathering with a Difference

0

13 February 2014 saw a congregation of people who had common interest at the National Training Centre. Their interest was taekwondo. But there was no competition on that day. It was a day for members and their families to let their hair down and have fun.

The event: STF Annual Chinese New Year Party.

Although taekwondo should be furthest from their mind, the participants’ conversation invariably led to topics related to the sport. Mr Milan Kwee, in his welcoming speech, could not help but took the opportunity to congratulate the medal winners in the recently concluded Asian Cities Gold Cup Tournament.

It was not possible not to talk about taekwondo after a scintillating performance coordinated by the Demonstration Chairman, Mr Daniel Kim.

Mr Johnny Ang, the oldest member of TEAMgOLD, was so thrilled by the demonstration that he told everyone who wanted to listen that he was blown away despite having watched many performances in his lifetime.

All the participants enjoyed the evening socializing. The younger ones have a great time playing games organized by senior members of the national squad.

Taekwondo in Wushu Event

In conjunction with the 3rd Wushu Competition held from 6 to 9 December 2013 at Yishun Secondary School, a mass martial arts exercise was organized on 8 December 2013 at Chong Pang CC.

Taekwondo was featured. Taking the stage to lead more than one thousand non-martial artists, almost exclusively residents of Nee Soon GRC, through their paces was Mr Daniel Kim, STF Demonstration Chairman.

Said Daniel, “I was delighted that the participants enjoyed the moves. They are certainly good learners. While some of them found the movements difficult in the beginning, they proved that they had what it took to master the skills.”

Mr Andrew Foong, the Organizing Chairman of the event thanked the Singapore Taekwondo Federation for its support.

‘Gift of Hope’ Courtesy of Induk Taekwondo

Here is a report submitted by Mr Ronnie Yap of Induk Taekwondo on his club project for victims of ‘Tyhoon Haiyan’.PROJECT “GIFT Of HOPE”.

Heeding the call for assistance for victims of ‘Typhoon Haiyan’, that devastated a great part of eastern Philippines in November last year, INDUK Taekwondo embarked on project “GIFT Of Hope”. The school called for donation of clothes, towels and blankets as well as cash on behalf of the Singapore Red Cross Society for the ‘Haiyan Relief Fund’.

Over the 2-week long exercise, we saw students, parents and friends dropped off bags and sometimes small boxes of needed items. Many also donated cash. It was heartening to see the outpouring of goodwill. A group of students and their families also volunteered their time on a Sunday afternoon to help sort and pack the items donated.”

A total of 19 cartons of clothes, towels and blankets were eventually packed and shipped out to a collection centre in the city of Tacloban. While a total of S$7,000.00 collected for the Singapore Red Cross Haiyan Relief. It was a generous display of compassion and benevolence from our students, their families, friends and partners, to the people in the Philippines.
