Sister Linda Sim Misses a World Medal

Sister Linda Sim, who has a couple of international medals under her belt, was looking forward to increasing her medal collection at the 8th World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships staged from 31 October to 3 November 2013 in Bali, Indonesia. But it was not to be as nerves got the better of her in the final.

After finishing third in the semi-final round to earn for herself a berth in the final, Sister Linda was eager to improve her position for a better medal color. That was a possibility as she scored a high 7.40 points for her first poomsae. At that point, the highest average score was 7.27 points.

Her supporters were optimistic that she would end up on the podium in the competition which attracted the best of the best, including World Champions – some many times over, in every category.

Sister Linda started off well for her second poomsae, which happened to be her favorite. Midway through her performance, she succumbed to a brief mental block which was possibly caused by the tremendous pressure of her wanting to do well.

Whatever it was, it was enough to result in her undoing. She registered a score of 7.04 points. Her average score for the two poomsae was 7.22 missing out on the bronze medal by 0.02.

Said a disappointed Sister Linda: “I did not know what had happened. If I was nervous, I did not feel it. I was going with the flow of the poomsae. And suddenly, I was lost. I was able to recover quickly but unfortunately I was punished for the temporary lapse. Well, that was part and parcel of the game.”

The other two Singapore representatives were Kang Rui Jie and Chelsea Sim. Both of them acquitted themselves well at the competition. Chelsea won a place in the semi-final after beating 16 performers in the individual category but could not go further. She and Kang teamed up to compete in the team event. The Singapore pair cleared the preliminary stage. In the semi-final, they gave of their best but it was not good enough for them to book a place in the final.

The other details, available at http://www.stf.sg/international-news/1204-asian-cities-tourney-selection-trials, remain unchanged.

Delay in the Release of NCAP (Level 2) Results

0

The results of the NCAP (Level 2) Technical Course will be released at latest in the second week of November.

The examiners require more time to discuss on the evaluation of  the participants.  It is necessary to give the participants the fairest outcome.

We apologize to all the participants if we have caused some anxiety because of the long wait.

Suspended for the Use of Vulgarity

0

Ms Veronica Phua, a coach from ACME Taekwondo, has been suspended from all activities organized or sanctioned by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) for one year.

During the period of suspension, she will be required to undertake projects to promote the positive values of taekwondo and its beneficial effect on character building under the mentorship of Dr Ho Mun Wai, STF 1st Vice-President.

In a posting on Twitter, Ms Phua used vulgar language liberally which was prejudicial to the conduct of a good coach. The STF was also brought into disrepute when she used profanities on the taekwondo pledge by calling it the @#$%& pledge.

All coaches are reminded to conduct themselves with decorum at all times as they are upheld by their students as role models. Using profanities in any form of communication will send the wrong signal and confuse the students.

The STF has zero tolerance, as far as coaches are concerned, for any behavior which is detrimental to the image of organization. For that matter, it will not allow anyone to undermine its effort to promote taekwondo as a character development sport.

Taekwondo: Good for my Daughter

Here is an unedited testimonial from Mr Alex Lim, father of Lynette Lim.

“Lynette Lim is an Anglican TKD alumna, who started TKD lessons at Elias CC when she was in Primary 3. As she progressed from white belt to junior black belt, she was particularly keen on Kyorugi and trained very hard with coaches at Elias CC, Mountbatten CC and Tampines Changkat CC. With reinforced discipline and intense trainings by dedicated coaches, especially Coach Tan Tak Hua and Master Lee, and a personal desire to excel, Lynette had managed to win various prizes in both Poomsae and Kyorugi competitions.

At Secondary 2, she decided to dedicate more time on her new found interest in track and field jumps. Although the sport is different, she recognizes that to do well, there is still the need for the same discipline, focus and inspiration, which she learnt while in Anglican TKD. She brought this fighting spirit and attitude into jumps and continue do well by winning prizes and breaking records. http://www.tnp.sg/sss/content/seventh-heaven-lynette

I hope the young students at Anglican TKD appreciate the opportunity to learn something while having TKD lessons. It is not just about how well you kick or block, but the discipline, fighting spirit and attitude that you need to bring into the sport. As a parent, I am proud of her achievements regardless in TKD or jumps and I am equally appreciative of the fact that her time spent at Anglican TKD played a significant role in her childhood development. I hope her achievements will be an inspiration to others just like she got hers from Anglican TKD.

Thank you to Master Lee, Coach Tan, other coaches (Sin-Yu, Pei-Qi, Esther and others, whom I apologise that I can’t remmember everyone’s names) and sparring partners who had trained with her.

P.S. Lynette has just been nominated for the top 10 TNP School Sports Stars 2013 – http://www.tnp.sg/sss/webform/vote-your-top-10-tnp-school-sports-stars-2013. Appreciate if you could also support her. Many thanks in advance!”

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation is confident that the training of taekwondo has resulted in life-changing experiences for the better for many participants. It will continue to be at the forefront of proactively promoting taekwondo as a tool for character development.
