Constitution Amended

0

At the Extraordinary Meeting held on 18 February 2012, Club representatives in attendance unanimously endorsed the proposed amendments to the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) Constitution to comply with the Singapore Sports Council requirements.

Mr Milan Kwee, STF President, explained during the meeting that the amendments were necessary to provide, among other things, a provision for succession. He said that he was for succession as it would be good for the organization.

Mr Kwee pointed out that he had in fact initiated the succession process by convincing former 1st and 2nd Vice-Presidents, Mr Steven Soh and Mr RA Jeyaraman respectively, to take a different role so that he could induct Mr Ho Mun Wai (STF 1st Vice-President) and Dr Lee Chee Wee (STF 2nd Vice-President). The idea was to groom either one of them to take over the leadership role of the organization.

When asked if they would support, by show of hands, the amendments, everyone present raised their hands without reservation.

The STF would like to put on record its appreciation to all affiliates which were representated at the meeting.

Taekwondo in Singapore is Doping-Free

0

Taekwondo in Singapore is doping-free. That is what the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) wants. That is what the taekwondo community should be proud of as it reflects important values of the sport.

The best way to prove that taekwondo in Singapore is doping-free is for taekwondo members to be tested.

The STF has agreed to collaborate with Antidoping Singapore on the In-Competition Testing and the Education Outreach to keep taekwondo doping-free.

All coaches have to ensure that their players do not unwitting consume any drug. It is easier not to take drugs than to explain how the drugs got into your system by accident or out of ignorance.

If your players are on medication containing substances on the prohibited list, they should be advised to apply for Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). Click the ‘Say No! to Doping’ icon on STF website, www.stf.sg, to find out more on TUE.

The STF will not hesitate to take serious disciplinary action against any member caught using performance enhancing drugs.

Check to be Sure

0

All coaches are reminded to check every grading card and the overall grading result sheet. Counting the number of cards and collecting the overall result sheet are not enough.

Here are the reasons:

  • The names on the result sheet may be wrongly spelt.
  • The grades of candidates may not be correctly reflected.
  • The grading card may show ‘double’ but the result printed is ‘pass’.

Coaches should also check the accuracy of the certificates they collect from the office.

Are the errors common? No.

Can it happen? Yes. But in the rare occasion when it happens, strangely it will come back and haunt all involved. Therefore all coaches are urged to ensure that every thing is in order before leaving the Secretariat.

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation appreciates your co-operation.

6 Medals Netted in International Tourney

0

The Singapore National Taekwondo Team returned from the 16th Asian Cities Gold Taekwondo Championships staged in Kowloon Park Sports Centre, Hongkong on 6 February 2012 with a haul of 6 medals – 3 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze.

The event held on 4 and 5 February saw 9 players from Singapore contending in the various weight categories.  The players led by Leon Koh (Team Manager and Coach) were Jordan Tay, Vincent Lim, Lim Choon Hon, Gan Guo Bin, Ng Ming Wei, Raja Zulfadli, Tio Jia Xin, Cheong Xuuen, Chew Kai Jun.

Arguably the best local female kyorugi player, Tio Jia Xin picked up the first gold medal for Singapore in the under 46kg (Junior Female) by beating an experienced Chinese Taipei player in the sudden death round. However, she did not require to dig deep into her bag of tricks in the run up to the final as she easily steamrolled them.

Our second and third gold medals came from Vincent Lim and Raja Zulfadli. Both of them had to work hard to eliminate their opponents. Vincent, pocketed the under 63kg (Senior Male) medal by beating his opponent in the sudden death round while Zul fought tooth and nail to earn his under 74kg (Senior Male) title although the score 13-7 did not reflect it.

The other medals came from the following:

  • Chew Kai Jun (Silver)
  • Jordan Tay (Silver)
  • Lim Choon Hon (Bronze)

In addition to the medals, the junior team received the Good Fighting Spirit Award and the senior male team captured the 3rd Overall runner up trophy.

To the team: Well done!

WADA Releases ‘Say NO! To Doping’ Clip

0

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has released a ‘Say NO! To Doping’ video clip as the latest element in an awareness campaign that is fast gaining worldwide support.

The ‘Say NO! To Doping’ campaign emphasizes the key sporting messages of courage, respect, effort and to accept challenges and is designed so international and national sports organizations can unite behind it in support of clean sport.

To-date, 16 organizations worldwide have embraced the ‘Say NO! To Doping’ campaign, including the UK Anti-Doping Agency and organizers of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The 30-second clip emphasizes the true values of sport and delivers a very clear message that genuine sporting success and enjoyment comes only through hard work and fair play, not through doping.

“Say NO! To Doping is a very important feature of our anti-doping awareness and education strategy and our aim is to develop further exposure through this video clip,” said David Howman, WADA Director General.

“It very clearly outlines what we all love about sport and focuses on the simple but highly-important values that clean sport represents.”

The clip is the latest of WADA’s turn-key awareness tools organizations can adopt to create their own anti-doping campaigns.

The clip received high-profile when it was broadcast to fans at the NHL’s All Star Game in Ottawa, Canada.

We encourage you to use this clip as a starting point to build anti-doping awareness and as a bridge to meaningful and substantive education program.

Learning to Spar

0

46 participants attended the Sparring Workshop held on 11 February 2012 at the National Training Centre conducted by Maeng Hanchoul and Kim Jaeseob .

The two instructors are members of the World Taekwondo Federation Peace Corp. Both of them have extensive experience in competition sparring. Maeng, who was the main instructor for the workshop, was a World Junior Champion.

The seminar was quite tough but enjoyable for all the participants. What’s more, they acquired new skills and training methods which would benefit their students.

One parent who had two children participating in the workshop commented that she was glad that the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) organized the workshop. She asked if the STF would be planning for more such activities and was advised to look out of announcement on the website.

All STF members are urged to take advantage of every opportunity to update and upgrade themselves.   If every member does that, taekwondo standard can only improve.

Taekwondo Featured in Chingay 2012

If you missed watching the Chingay Parade 2012 on 3 and 4 February at the F1 Pit Building or the delayed telecast of the event on 5 February on Channel 8, chances are that you might not be aware that the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) had a performance contingent in the parade segment.

250 members came together to put up a colorful and scintillating act on both days. They were from Bowen Secondary School, Temasek Junior College, Shota Taekwondo, Republic Polytechnic, Springfield Secondary School, Acme Taekwondo, St Teresa Taekwondo, Akira-X Taekwondo, Dragonix Taekwondo Anglican Taekwondo and St Anthony Cannosian Secondary School.

Their performances were impressive enough to draw favorable comments from the organizers and many spectators.  Many of them shared the views that the taekwondo display was simply magnificent.

The reception the taekwondo performers received from the spectators made the many hours of practices worth their while.  Under the guidance of Mr Tan Cheng Hui (STF Demonstration Chairman), Mr Lee Thiam Huat (Anglican Taekwondo Chief Instructor) and Mr Leon Koh (Shota Taekwondo Chief Instructor), the performers trained long and hard in preparation for the big day.  Sometimes the training ended well past midnight.

During the tail end of the event, a balloon carrying the ‘taekwondo with a heart’ message was displayed with other balloons.  Taekwondo with heart is a programme initiated by the STF to make it possible for the ‘disadvantaged’ to learn the sport under its full sponsorship.

The STF would like to thank all performers and their parents for their patience and support and the coaches and volunteers for their enthusiasm and dedication.  Together they have made the participation of taekwondo possible in the iconic event created by Singaporeans and started in 1973.
