Daryl Tan and Nurul Shafinas Bte Abdul Rahman, both winners of the bronze medal in the 1st Youth Olympic Games (YOG), saw their efforts being recognized when they collected their SNOC-NTUC Fairprice Foundation Sports Scholarship from Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence and President of Singapore National Olympic Council on 15 September 2010 at the Singapore Sports School.
They were each awarded $17,500. The scholarship which will be administered by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) will be used for, among other things, their academic education and taekwondo development.
Wong Liang Ming, the coach, Christopher Lee and Zakirah Bte Zakaria, the other two Singapore taekwondo representatives at the YOG, were present to witness the ceremony.
At the reception, they took the opportunity to interact with some of the VIPs including Mr Ng Ser Miang, Vice-President of the International Olympic Committee and the SNOC and Mr Seah Kian Peng, MP for Marine Parade GRC.
The 2010 National Kyorugi Championships organized over four days – 4, 5, 11 and 12 September – were a resounding success. The event which was smoothly and safely conducted saw a participation of over 700 players representing 47 clubs.
The players, whose ages ranged from 5 (Abraham Ang Yi Wei from Bukit Panjang CC) to 53 (Bong Peng Luck from TEAMgOLD) years old, showed a lot of spirit, enthusiasm and sportsmanship. They excited the evidently partisan crowd which added to the tensed but fun atmosphere.
Said STF President Milan Kwee at the end of the competition: “It was like a carnival. You could see everyone enjoying themselves. I reckon it is the best championships ever.”
The STF President was spot on. Many supporters in cheerful mood came in different colored uniforms ready to turn the event into a carnival. They enhanced the decorations by draping the railings with their club banners and flags which came in various sizes and designs. Some were well prepared with their ‘picnic’ baskets.
It certainly made everyone feel good to see the players giving of their all to win honors for their clubs; the coaches digging deep into their bags of tactics to give their players their best guidance; the team mangers and the players’ parents ensuring that the ‘gladiators’ had sufficient calories to fulfill their ‘mission’ and the crowd egging the players on with their raucous support, never mind some of them were ‘fighting’ a loss cause.
There was hardly any quiet moment. The spectators simply shouted themselves hoarse while rooting for their players. Whenever there was a countdown followed by loud cheers, you could be sure that it was a match which had them on tenterhooks. They seemed not mind as they were evidently enjoying it!
After the last match of the championships were decided, Acme Taekwondo took home the overall title with 29 gold, 19 silver and 16 bronze medals followed by J H Kim HQ with 19 gold, 3 silver and 11 bronze medals, Team Aljunied with 15 gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze medals, Sports Connective with 12 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze medals and Cheng San CC with 10 gold, 5 silver and 10 bronze medals.
The most prestigious ‘Sportsmanship and Fair Play’ award went to Chan Kok Peng of Sports Connective. It is a special award to recognize the display of the taekwondo values which the Singapore Taekwondo Federation is encouraging and promoting.
Chan demonstrated how players are expected to conduct themselves by applauding his opponent for a well executed technique and giving his opponent a helping hand to recover from a fall and more while doing his best to overcome a strong challenge from his opponent.
He also brought to the attention of the officials when he sensed something was wrong with the scoring system which put the opposition at a disadvantage. His exemplary behavior set a standard for others to emulate.
The other award winners and all the results are attached.
The STF would like to put on record its thanks to this year’s organizing chairman Tay Xiong Sheng and his committee for a job well done.

The STF is pleased and grateful that the organization and the sport have been finally recognized by the Ministry of Education, the Singapore Schools Sports Council and the Singapore Primary Schools Sports Council.
School-going members of the STF can now enjoy the benefits of having their achievements in the sport recognized.
In a letter to Mr Milan Kwee, President of the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF), Mr Choue Chungwon, President of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), congratulated Mr Kwee on the extraordinary achievement of the first ever Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
Said Mr Choue: “Your efforts created a well organized event that was praised by many. I am very proud of this successful accomplishment and all that you and your staff put into making it happen. Your entire staff proved that exemplary work can help to create a very smooth running event.
“I would like to congratulate and thank you for all of your efforts on the Youth Olympic Games. Please send my gratitude to Secretary General Wong Liang Ming, General Manager Lim Teong Chin and Council Member Andy Lee Thiam Poh for the roles they played in making the taekwondo competition a huge success.”
In response to Mr Choue’s letter, Mr Kwee, said, among other things: “We could not have done it without your excellent leadership and the support of WTF staff and officials including the technical delegate and all the international referees. The WTF demonstration team with their scintillating performances was a source of inspiration and excitement for many.
“On behalf of the taekwondo fraternity, I salute you for your indispensable guidance, generous contribution and constant encouragement in bringing the sport to another level of accomplishments.”
For the STF, the Youth Olympic Games taekwondo event has been good for the further development of the sport. It has provided a clearer picture of the pathways for taekwondo participants and demonstrated the capability of local officials in handling world-class events. Most importantly, the achievements of Singapore medalists, Daryl Tan Jia Jun and Nurul Shafinas Bte Abdul Rahman, have given hopes to our other young athletes for bigger things!
All committee members, club leaders, club coaches, national technical officials, national referees and taekwondo volunteers in the recent Youth Olympic Games and the National Championships are cordially invited by the President and Management of Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) to the Volunteers’ Nite.
The event will be held on Saturday 18 September 2010 at 6.30pm at the National Training Centre at Whampoa.

6.30 pm Welcome Address by STF President
6.40 pm Presentation of the World Taekwondo Federation Citation to outstanding volunteers.
6.50 pm Presentation of YOG Volunteers’ Certificates
7.00 pm Dinner Served
8.00 pm End of function
Please call Jolene, Theresa or Rosalind at 6345 1491 by Wednesday 15 September 2010 if you are able to attend the function. If we do not hear from you, we will presume that you will not be coming.
Remember it is uncharacteristic of a taekwondo member not to inform the organiser if he or she will be at the function.
A coach induction course was organized on 9 August 2010 at the STF Secretariat to qualify coaches for the professional passes.
20 coaches attended the session which saw lively discussions on the various ethical coaching issues. They also learned about the importance of supporting the culture of sportsmanship and fair play which the Singapore Taekwondo Federation was working very hard to promote.
With the blessings of the Singapore Taekwondo Federation, three local clubs – namely, Nanyang Polytechnic, Raiders TKD and Zen Taekwondo Club – participated in Traditional Taekwondo Sports Centre Invitational Tournament held in Malacca, Malaysia on 31 July 2010.
The championships attracted representations from Indonesia, India Thailand, Scotland, Malaysia and Singapore. Malaysia was represented by various states teams.
The three clubs from Singapore fielded 21 players and returned with 18 medals – 6 gold, 6 silver and 6 bronze medals.
The taekwondo activities managed by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation for the Youth Olympics Games Cultural & Educational Programme were very popular among the visitors.
Under the supervision of Ng Lee Noi, Ho Mun Wai and a host of other volunteers conducted the activities comprising educational information on the sport and tryouts for the more adventurous. It was held on the 3rd floor of Suntec International Convention Hall from 15 to 18 August 2010.
The Korean National Demonstration Team members, who mesmerized the crowd with their performances on the main stage on two evenings, were also present to excite the participants with their skills and reveal the secrets of developing the various techniques.
Those who participated in the activities were given souvenirs and a certificate each.
Here are some pictorial records of the event. Enjoy!
The trainees at Induk Taekwondo were thrilled to see for 4 young Olympians and their coach on Saturday 28 August 2010 at their gymnasium off Guillemard Road.
The visit was arranged by Ronnie Yap, the Club Director, immediately after the Youth Olympic Games which saw two of the players clinched the first two medals in the Games for Singapore. It was to give the enthusiastic children an opportunity to interact with the Olympians and hopefully motivate them to take their path to ‘stardom’.
Coach Wong Liang Ming gave them a little taste of what they had to do to achieve success in the sport by conducting a short session. At the end of it, the kids were asked if they liked the training. While a good number of them replied positively, some were not as excited.
When asked for the reason, the response: “It was too tough!” That drew laughter from the parents, who took leave or cancelled their other appointments, just to be there for their children.

However, when it came to sparring with the ‘stars’ – Daryl Tan, Nurul Shafinas Bte Abdul Rahman, Nur Zakirah Bte Zakaria and Christopher Lee, the kids showed tremendous potential by giving their ‘opponents’ a hard time. If it were in a competition, they would all emerged champions.
