Tell Your Students the Whole Truth

0

Recently all participants taking up taekwondo in Community Centers/Clubs (CCs) and Resident’s Committee Centers (RCs) are asked to sign a form acknowledging that they had read the advisory notes. Although the notes are factually correct, they do not reflect the whole picture.

Based on the notes, participants will not know whether they can represent their schools in the National School Taekwondo Championships which will be officially included in the school sports calendar in 2010 unless they ask.

They will not know if they can carry Singapore flag in the SEA Games, Youth Olympic Games and other multi-sports events unless they ask.

They will not know if their grades are recognized by a handful of members or by thousands locally and internationally unless they ask.

They will not know the status of the taekwondo organization they are with unless they ask.

But how many will ask?

All Singapore Taekwondo Federation coaches should not wait for their participants to ask. You should be proud to inform your participants the organization they are with, the privileges they can have for being your students and their grades are recognized by a body and not just a legally registered club.

More importantly, tell them factually about the other legally registered clubs. Articles in the must-read column on the STF website (www.stf.sg) should be able to give your students a better idea of the clubs. Encourage them to visit the website regularly for the latest updates.

First Singaporean World-Ranked Taekwondo Player

0

Jacqueline Quek Jie Lin earned her world ranking when she finished third in the Asian Martial Arts Games held in Bangkok, Thailand in August 2009. She is ranked 48th in the under 73kg for the women category.

With that, she became the first Singaporean to be ranked since the ranking of players was introduced by the World Taekwondo Federation on 1 January 2009.

Jacqueline and her sister, Geraldine, both members of Leng Kee CC, were recommended by their coach, Derrick Tang, for inclusion in the National Training Squad in 2008. Although Geraldine showed more potential in the beginning, it was Jacqueline who went on to accomplish more.

In her first international assignment in Danga Bay Tournament in 2008, Jacqueline returned with a bronze medal. 1 year later, she took the silver medal in the Asian Cities Gold Cup held in Hong Kong in February 2009 and continued her medal-winning streak with a gold in the Asean Taekwondo Championships held on 6 June 2009 in Vietnam before she reached the podium in the Asian Martial Arts Games.

Jaqueline has recently been selected to represent Singapore in the World Taekwondo Championships in October 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation wishes her the best in her maiden World competition.

2-time Olympic Medalist Provides Useful Fighting Tips

0

Pascal Gentil, 2-time Olympic medalist, 4-time World Cup champion and 14-time French national title winner, was at the temporary National Training Centre on 2 October 2009 to observe the national training squad going through their paces.

Being a passionate taekwondo practitioner, he just could not resist sharing some of his favorite fighting techniques. He also took the opportunity to point out mistakes made by some of the players and give them useful fighting tips.

Although Gentil retired after he won his national title early this year and had not done much taekwondo since, he could still demonstrate some mean and blinding kicks. He was also very agile and flexible.

Gentil revealed: “Since I took up my position as the Director General in Veolia Environmental Services based in Beijing, I do not have much time for training. But I keep fit by going to the gymnasium as often as possible.”

At the end of the training session, Gentil took some pictures with the players and shared some light-hearted moments with them. He even fooled around with them showing that he was still a ‘player’ at heart.

He said: “I enjoyed being with the players. They are all very warm and friendly.”

Ivan Returns from Deaflympics with Regrets

0

Ivan Mok, Singapore’s sole taekwondo representative in the 21st Summer Deaflympics Taipei held at the end of August 2009 in Taipei, almost did the nation proud when he narrow missed a podium finish. Only one point separated him and a place in the semi-finals.

Ivan, facing Andrew Yick Chun Ki of Great Britain in the quarter-finals, was tentative in the first round. He was punished by his opponent who took a 2-0 lead at the end of the round.

After taking some valuable advice from his coach, Brian Peh, during the one-minute break, Ivan entered the arena for the second round with greater confidence. He showed it by using some high risk techniques which earned him a total of 3 points. The round ended with 3 a piece.

For the third round, Ivan decided to play a defensive game. That was a mistake! And it cost him the match and the opportunity to move on to the next round.

Said a disappointed Ivan: “I regret not keeping the same strategy I adopted for the second round. It was so close yet so far. Nevertheless, I have learned a lot from my first international exposure.”

Ivan was not the only one who had benefited from the outing.

Brian said: “I am honoured to be his coach in the Deaflympics and delighted to have gained invaluable insight on how the competition for the hearing impaired is conducted.

“It is my ardent wish that SADeaf can attract talented hearing impaired taekwondo players for future overseas competition. Plans are afoot for a World Cup Taekwondo for the Deaf. When it happens, we want to be there with a bigger and stronger team.”

Well, coaches, you have heard from Brian. If you have any potential hearing impaired students, encourage them to join SADeaf and do Singapore proud.

No Parking at Toa Payoh Sports Hall

0

We regret to announce that there will no parking available at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall on Sunday 4 October 2009, the date of the centralized grading.

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) was informed on Wednesday 23 September 2009 that the car park would be closed for those involved in the Healthy Lifestyle event at the adjacent stadium and also for security reasons.

All club leaders, coaches and parents of candidates are advised to use public transport. If driving is necessary, please park at the nearby HDB car parks.

In view of the expected large crowd on that day, car park space may not be easily available. All those who will be driving may wish to give themselves enough time so that they or the candidates will not be late for the grading.

We appreciate your understanding and co-operation in the matter.

Poomsae Referees will be important to clubs who plan participate in future National School Championships and National Poomsae Championships as all participating clubs will be required from next year to provide at least one poomsae referee to qualify for participation in poomsae competitions.

All clubs are advised to start planning early for their officiating needs.
