They Have the Moves

0

43 poom belts and 30 black belts participated in the Unarmed Course (Level 1) organized on 7, 8, 14 and 21 March 2009 at the National Training Centre. The timing for the poom belts and blackbelts are different although it we held on the same day.

The course was conducted by Tan Kim Hoon, a member of the Martial Arts Committee and Board of Examiners. He was assisted by other members of the Martial Arts Committee including its chairman, RA Jeyaraman.

During the course, the participants observed strictly the safety guidelines.
They were serious in their practice and train diligently the various techniques.

At the end of the course they were assessed by Steven Soh and Jeyaraman for their ability to defend themselves against attacks which would require them to employ their self-defence skills. Most candidates showed that they had the moves and therefore, deserved to pass.

Said Jeyaraman: “I am delight that the courses were smoothly and successful conducted.   I am also happy with the results of the tests. The candidates had convinced me that they had done their homework.”

The results of the courses are attached.

A Fun Workshop

0

Fifty-two participants attended the sparring workshop held on 15 March 2009 at the National Training Centre. It was a fun workshop as the participants enjoyed the antics of the course conductors.

More importantly, at the end of the workshop, the participants were better equipped to further improve their sparring skills. They knew what it took to be number one in the game.

The workshop started with the viewing of a competition video which highlighted a lot of exciting techniques. Then, Ms Wong Liang Ming, Head Coach of the National Team, spoke to them about the winner’s mindset, the concept of time and space and the way to improve kicking and punching speed.

After that, Ms Wong assisted by national players – Keith Ong, Wesley Ong and Jordan Tay – evaluated the participants’ kicking and punching skills. While some of the participants required to correction in the execution of the techniques, the rest moved on to do skill training. The first group later joined the main group.

Said Nichelle, one of the participants: “I enjoyed the workshop. It was fun. I also learned more about sparring.”

Nominations Wanted for Sports Award 2010

0

The POSB Everyday Champions for Sports Award is an annual award for Singaporeans and organizations that promote sports passionately.

While winning individuals must have, among other things, consistently spent time and gone the extra mile to inspire others to play sports, winning organizations are those that have promoted an environment conducive for members to participate in sports and more.

If you know of anyone or and organization which deserves nominations, you may do so online at www.SingaporeSports.sg/POSBChampions. However, if you prefer the ‘traditional’ way, you may obtain the forms from the STF office.

The submission of nominations closes on 28 March 2010.

For enquiries, please contact Avivar at 6324 2418 or email to posbchampions@singaporesports.sg.

They May Be Old But ….

0

…. they had a couple of moves to show. And they showed off their skills in a promotion test conducted for them on 8 March 2009 at the National Training Centre.

After 11 months of training, 13 members from the TEAMgOLD participated in the grading.   They sportingly subjected them to the judgment of a panel of senior examiners comprising Chin Khee Shin, Steven Soh and RA Jeyaraman. For all the candidates, the last time they took their grading was more than 30 years ago.

They might be not so young but they still had some mean kicks and punches in them. They might be a bit ‘rusty’ but they made it up with their determination and enthusiasm. All of them demonstrated that they could adapt to the changes to the movements over the years.

Performing three standard poomsae and other grading requirements, the candidates certainly impressed the judges and others present including Mr Milan Kwee, President of the Singapore Taekwondo Federation, with their energy, enthusiasm and dynamism.

The following passed their tests:

1st to 2nd Dan

  • Bong Peng Luck
  • Han Hew Juan
  • Lim Meng Tong
  • Ronald Lim
  • Jeffrey Koh
  • Tan Boon Hock
  • Linda Sim

2nd to 3rd Dan

  • Michael Tan
  • Christopher Ong

3rd to 4th Dan*

  • William Lai
  • Yan Fook Churn

4th to 5th Dan*

  • Dicky Goi
  • Leong Yun Yuet

*subject to passing the theory test

Kudos to all the successful candidates for showing all of us that age is only a number. Most importantly, thank you for demonstrating that taekwondo can be a lifelong sport and a choice for healthy lifestyle for the senior citizens.
