A selection trial for the SEA Games 2009 in Laos, was conducted on Sunday 22 February 2009 at the National Training Centre. 18 players from 10 clubs vied for 11 categories.

Before the start of the selection process, Mr Milan Kwee, President of the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF), spoke to the candidates regarding the commitment of the organization to develop players for the Games and beyond by exposing as many players as possible to international training and competitions.

However, he added that the players had to be committed to training to be worthy of consideration for the international development programme.

Mr Kwee also took the opportunity to highlight the importance of having the right values. He said that character should come first.

The following are the decisions of the selectors comprising Mr Chin Khee Shin and Mr Steven Soh – two of the most senior taekwondo members in the STF.

Overseas Training Stint

Two players from the national squad – Jason Tan and Jordan Tay – left for Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei on 13 February 2009 to train with the best in the country.

Chinese Taipei is a preferred choice for Singapore players to hone their skills. It is not only among the top taekwondo nations in the world but also has a strong relationship with Singapore in the sport. The friendship dates back to the early 70s. What’s more, there is no language problem.

Both Jason and Jordan, who were champions in their respective weight categories in the recently completed 13th Asian Cities Gold Cup Taekwondo Championships staged in Hong Kong, China, were given a warm welcome by Asst National Coach Chen Wei Hsin at the airport and by the Chinese Taipei Head Coach Liu Ching Wen at the Taiwan National Athletes Training Centre.

Through the kind arrangement of the Chinese Taipei Taekwondo Association, Jason and Jordan are sharing an air-conditioned room with excellent facilities. The other national trainees at the camp do not enjoy the same comfort. But when it comes to training, it is the same for all.

The two boys started training the day after arrival and are experiencing the rigor of training six to eight hours a day. Although they are finding the training very tough, they do not plan to quit as they know it will only make them better.

While Jordan is taking time off from his school, Dunearn Secondary School, to train for one month, Jason will be there for two months. Jason is awaiting entry into Temasek Polytechnics some time in April 2009.

Good Performances in Hong Kong Tourney

Singapore team returned from the 13th Asian Cities Gold Cup Taekwondo Championships held from 6 to 8 February 2009 in Hong Kong, China with 3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals and two overall 3rd runners-up trophies for Senior Male and Junior Male Divisions.

Mr Milan Kwee (STF President) with Team Singapore, family members & friends at the airport.

Our three gold medals came from Jason Tan, Jordan Tay and Wesley Ong.

Jason was simply brilliant. Competing in his first international competition as a senior player, he demolished his opponents with his blinding kicks which almost never fail to find their marks. He controlled his four matches well to become a well-deserved winner.

Sharing the limelight with Jason were his team mates Jordan and Wesley. Both Jason and Wesley had to fight stronger, taller and more experienced players. Despite their disadvantages, they showed guts and determination to take the titles by beating three players each in hard fought battles. They had to dig deep in their bags of tactical tricks to foil their opponents’ plan.

The other medal winners were

  • Keith Ong (Silver)
  • Tessa Tang (Silver)
  • Ong Tian Ling (Bronze)
  • Goh Jun Jie (Bronze)
  • Jacqueline Quek (Bronze)

Said Coach Wong Liang Ming: “I am happy with the results. But what made me happier was the tremendous team spirit displayed by everyone, including the accompanying family members.”

The details of the workshop are as follows.

Date                :           Sunday 15 March 2009

Time               :           2.00pm to 5pm

Place              :           National Training Centre

Fees               :           $20

Registration     :           By Friday 6 March 2009

Be a Professional Coach

“It is an eye-opener,” said Mohd Adnan Abdullah, one of the participants in the Coach Induction Course held on Sunday 8 February 2009 at the National Training Centre.

He added: “I realize that there is more to just sharing of skills in coaching. There is so much responsibility. As coaches, we represent our clubs, our sport and the Singapore Taekwondo Federation. We have to be a credit.”

42 coaches attended the course. And they learned, among other things, that the best legacy a coach could leave was the life lessons he or she taught his or her students. Was it easy? They knew from case study that it was a challenge when their job and popularity were at stake. But they also knew the direction that they should take if they wanted to impart the right values.

It is now up to the following who attended the course to decide if they dare to take up the professional pass which is a symbol of their willingness to undertake the full obligations of a coach.
