Upgrading of Poomsae Referees

0

34 poomsae referees ranging from Class 1 to 3P attended the Poomsae Referee Refresher Course held on 3 May 2008 at the National Training Centre.

They were at the course for a common purpose of upgrading themselves so that poomsae competitors could have the best referees they deserved. They certainly had the right attitude.

The participants at the course learned about the significance of good judging and the method of detecting errors.   After that, they revised their poomsae and practiced using the electronic scoring system.

The main aim of the practical judging was to enhance the consistency of judging – that was to make sure there was not too much variance in the judges’ scores. At the end of the practice, the judges proved that they were ready for their assignments.

Why? They know what to look for. They know how the poomsae and basic movements are correctly performed. They know how to score. And they are the following.

43 Coaches Attend Grading Briefing

0

43 coaches who attended the Grading Briefing conducted on Saturday 19 April 2008 at the National Training Centre had a clearer picture of how to prepare their students for grading.

They were also informed of the latest grading requirements and development. Some of which included the following.

  • With immediate effect, all successful 15-year old candidates will be awarded dan certification in line with Kukkiwon regulations. Those holding poom belts may apply for conversion to dan on reaching 15 years old.
  • Each round of sparring will last from 20 seconds to 1 minute. It is up to the discretion of the examiners.
  • Clubs sending grading one and higher candidates are expected to arrange sparring partners for their candidates. If no arrangement is made, the examiners will decide on what they deemed appropriate.

Help at Hand

The recently completed centralized grading concluded with a high percentage of failures.

From the feedback received from its examiners, the Singapore Taekwondo Federation learned that most candidates were not prepared well enough for the grading.

While some candidates were still doing the traditional movements for poomsae, others thought that to ‘kill’ the opponents was equal to skills. Those were not what the examiners were looking for.

Grade 1 and higher candidates (junior and senior) can find out more about the examiners’ expectations by joining the next Grading Preparation Workshop.

The details are as follows.

Date                :           Sunday 25 May 2008

Time               :           2 to 5 pm

Place              :           National Training Centre (NTC)

Dress Code   :           ‘Dobok’

Certification   :           Certificate of Participation

Fee                 :           $30

Closing Date:           Tuesday 20 May 2008

The registration form is attached.

The activity, which will be run by senior examiners, will be beneficial to members who want to know what they must do to achieve success in the grading. For candidates who wish to find out in detail why they fail, the workshop is a good place for them to get the answers.

2nd National Poomsae Championships 2008

0

The 2nd National Poomsae Championships 2008 will be held on Sunday 15 June 2008 at 9.00am at Toa Payoh Sports Hall.

For the championships, we have made some modifications to the division, category and recognised poomsae on the suggestions of some club officials and participants.

We have increased the number of divisions from 6 to 7 and categories from 6 to 10. The pattern requirement for each performer has been reduced from 2 to 1. These changes are to make the competition more attractive.

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation reserves the right to integrate the divisions and categories. Those affected by the change may withdraw if they do not wish to participate in the consolidated divisions or categories.

The details of the competition and entry forms are attached.

For enquiries, please call Mr Lee Thiam Poh, Tournament Chairman, at 9106 4421.

A Top Junior Filipino Player Trains at the NTC

0

James Luzuriaga, a 15 year old taekwondo exponent from the Philippines, was in Singapore from 31 March to 4 April 2008 to explore the possibility of continuing his education at the Temasek Polytechnic.

It was coincidental that he had chosen Temasek because the institution was ideal for him to pursue his further education and sport interest. It offered not only the course he was interested in but also a taekwondo programme which he excelled.

Temasek finished second in the recent NTU Invitation Championships. It lost narrowly to NTU for the overall title.

During James’ visit, he took the opportunity to train with the national training squad at the National Training Centre from 1 to 3 April 2008.

James proved to be a dream player for all coaches. He was coachable, capable and committed. What’s more, he gave more than 100 per cent to each training session. Members of the national training squad were impressed with his focus and dedication.

It was no wonder because James, despite his tender age, was already an accomplished player with numerous titles under his belt. Last year, he collected 6 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze in numerous championships in the Philippines and overseas and served notice that he would be the one to watch in the Youth Olympic Games in 2010

A briefing for club officials and coaches will be held on Saturday 19 April 2008 at 5.30pm at the National Training Centre.

The session will provide, among other things, information on the examiners’ expectations of candidates, challenges faced by the Grading Committee and future grading requirements.

Officials and coaches can use the opportunity to share their concerns and provide feedback on grading areas which can be improved further. Your concerns, observations and recommendations will be studied by the Grading Committee which will put forward its proposals to the Management Committee for its consideration.

Although the dress code is casual, it does not mean that participants can come in shorts nd singlets. We expect participants to be decently dressed by normal standard – for example shirt and trousers, T-shirt and track pants, etc.

Please register with Jolene, Theresa or Linda at 63451491 by Thursday 17 April 2008 if you wish to attend the briefing.

All clubs are advised to send at least one representative each to the briefing. Students of clubs which are not represented will be disadvantaged as they may not be properly guided for their grading.
