Representatives of participating affiliates are encouraged to print the documents and bring them along for the Team Mangers’ Meeting and Drawing of Lots on Sunday 3 August 2008 at 2.30pm at the National Training Centre.
All participating affiliates are expected to have at least a representative each at the meeting. During the meeting, important and helpful information will be provided. It will also be a good time for the representatives to raise any questions they may have.
Lee Thiam Huat, one of the 29 referees selected to officiate in the taekwondo event in the Beijing Olympics 2008, was in Beijing, China from 13 to 19 July to attend the Olympic Referee Refresher Course.
It was important for him and the other referees to attend the seminar because of the heavy responsibility they had to ensure that the competition was not only fair but also exciting. During the seminar, the referees were reminded of their roles as a referee and a judge and the need to be transparent, fair and consistent. They were also taught more.
Said Thiam Huat: “The course turned out to be more than just another course to maintain the standard of selected referees. Besides the usual revision on the interpretation of competition rules and practical hand signals and match management, we learned about the Olympic Movements. We were also given an educational tour of some of the latest sports facilities.
“Mr Ivan Dibos, a member of the International Olympic Committee from Peru and a member of the World Taekwondo Federation Council, talked about the history of the Olympics and the development of the Olympic Movement. He presented the topic very well and managed to capture our attention.”
On the course proper, the referees went through numerous simulation exercises to prepare them to handle various challenging situations which might occur during the competition.
When asked for his thoughts on the course, Thiam Huat said: “There is no doubt that the course was important and beneficial for our preparation.”
After the Annual General Meeting on 19 July 2008, the Management Committee comprising 4 co-opted, 5 reserved and 5 elected members unanimously agreed to the following line-up.
President : Milan Kwee
1st Vice-President : Steven Soh
2nd Vice-President : RA Jeyaraman
Hon Secretary : Wong Liang Ming
Asst Hon Secretary : Arlene Lim
Hon Treasurer : Ng Lee Noi
Asst Hon Treasurer : Lee Thiam Poh
Members : Tan Cheng Hui
Ng Hwa Ann
Robin Chow
David Koh
Peter Lim
Tan Kok Heng
Jimmy Tay
The new faces in the Committee were Arlene, David, Peter and Jimmy. The last Committee members who were not in the new Committee were Lim Keng Leong, Edmund Tan, Nordon Lim and Tan Beng Hua.
While recording his thanks to the outgoing members for their contributions to the organisation, STF President Milan Kwee reminded those seeking to join the Management to be prepared to sacrifice their time, effort and resources.
He said: “There is a lot of work for members of the new Management Committee if they wish to move the STF a notch up in its development. As I see it, all members of the Management must have that desire and that desire must be translated into action. Otherwise, they have no business sitting on the Management.”
During the meeting, STF President also thanked all affiliates for making the progress of the STF possible and urged them to continue supporting the organisation.
The following successfully completed the coaching briefing held on 10 July 2008 at the Singapore Taekwondo Federation Secretariat.
The above named coaches are now eligible to apply for their professional coach passes – special, kyorugi or poomsae. The types of passes will depend on their coaching qualifications.
The coaches will also be required to sign an undertaking to let their personal and professional pride guide them in upholding the core values of the sport.
The Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) grading officials noted that a few female candidates were NOT wearing white T-shirts with their ‘dobok’ as required by the grading regulations. They were put in a difficult position as they could not rectify the situation without disrupting the smooth running of the grading procedure.
With effect from the next centralized grading, female candidates wearing other than plain white T-shirts will automatically fail their grading.
The examiners and grading officials reserve the rights not to inform candidates that they have flouted the uniform rule. It is the responsibility of the coaches and candidates to ensure that they are properly attired for the grading.
Coaches, who are assisting in the grading, are reminded that they should wear white taekwondo shoes (with or without stripes) with their ‘dobok’. It is not presentable and appropriate to wear any other types of shoes with the ‘dobok’. Alternatively, coaches should be barefooted.
The STF appreciates the co-operation of all coaches and candidates in making the grading a success.
The 2nd People’s Association-Singapore Taekwondo Federation Taekwondo Championships held on 12 and 13 July 2008 at Yishun Sports Hall saw Tampines North CC, Yio Chu Kang CC and Aljunied CC fighting tooth and nail for the title.
The tournament was open only to taekwondo members of CCs recognised by the STF.
The three CCs outshone the rest in terms of not only the number of players fielded for the competition but also the number of quality players in their teams. While the other teams had a couple of good players, the top three CCs had a lot of players who had the potential of making mincemeat out of their opponents.True to form, Tampines took the overall title with 8 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals to narrowly edge Yio Chu Kang CC which collected 7 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals. Aljunied CC finished third with 6 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals followed by Tampines East CC (4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals) and Moulmein CSC (3 gold, 4 silver and 11 bronze medals).
The organizers were glad that the event graced by Mr Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports and Ministry of Transport, was conducted smoothly and fairly. The event went very well without any hitch or protest. What’s more, the event attracted a participation of 532 players from 44 clubs. It also drew a good crowd throughout the competition.
More importantly, the event provided opportunities for community bonding. The competition format required each poomsae team to have performers from at least two ethnic groups. There was also a good mix of participants and spectators from the various communities.
In short, the championships had all the ingredients of a successful event.
The following were successful in the retest conducted on 22 June 2008 at the National Training Centre.
Our congratulations to all successful candidates.
