Sparring Secrets Revealed

0

About 50 blackbelts including some from the national squad gathered at the National Training Centre on 19 July 2007 to attend a workshop conducted by Chen Wei Hsin.

Wei Hsin, a holder of several international titles and personal trainer of Chen Shi Xin (2004 Athens Olympics Taekwondo Gold Medallist), was invited by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation to share his knowledge with the coaches and the national squad players. For the workshop, he focused on the key to sparring success.

The participants showed tremendous interest in his techniques. Some of them were seen practicing the moves in front of the mirror while others were asking him many and varied questions well after the workshop.

Said National Coach Wong Liang Ming: “Wei Hsin has been invited not only because of his knowledge and experience but also his willingness to share his secret recipe of producing champions. The workshop participants have benefited from the session. And most importantly, our national squad players appreciate what have learnt previously.”

2006/2007 Annual Review

0

Looking back, we can say that we had a busy year. And what a year it was with so many happenings which, we believe, our members had enjoyed and benefited.

During the period of review, we organized 25 courses, seminars and workshops. It is a record number of programmes in the history of the organization. What’s more, the activities were well-attended and 6 of them were held for the first time.   The new activities were

  • Unarmed Combat Programme
  • Poomsae Coach Course
  • Poomsae Referee Course
  • Sparring Programme
  • Competitive Sparring Workshop (organized by the Lady Committee which was formed in February 2007)
  • JUMP Workshop

Besides educational programmes, our calendar was filled with numerous tournaments – 11 to be exact. 4 were new. They were

  • Presbyterian High Challenge Cup
  • 1st NationalInter-JuniorCollege Taekwondo Poomsae Championships
  • 1st National Taekwondo Poomsae Taekwondo Championships
  • People’s Association-Singapore Taekwondo Federation Taekwondo Championships

While all the tournaments were well-organized, the 1st National Inter-Junior College Taekwondo Poomsae Championships and People’s Association-Singapore Taekwondo Federation Taekwondo Championships stood out – the former for its outstanding sportsmanship and tremendous atmosphere and the latter for its significance as an event for community bonding.

The year also saw us introduce a new training scheme for junior players. The scheme, STF-Tampines North CC Junior Training Scheme, kicked off with 35 players. Seven months into the programme, we can see improvements in the standard of the participants.

The icing on the cake for the Federation was no doubt the taekwondo programme specially designed for children with cancer at Assisi Hospice. Although the primary objectives of the programmes are to put life in their years and years in their lives, the children defied all odds to give two spectacular demonstrations and win top honours at the 1st National Taekwondo Poomsae Championships. The Management Committee is glad that its decision to initiate the programme has been vindicated.

Has the Federation arrived? No. We have come a long way since the trying year of 2003/2004. But we certainly have a lot more to do and achieve. There is no secret as to how the Federation can go from strength to strength. We have to continue to walk our talk together.

Thank you for being part of the team which helps rebuild the organization.

Gold for JOYce

0

The 9th World Taekwondo Festival & Malaysia Open 2007 held on 29 and 30 June 2007 at Stadium Juana in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia attracted 750 players from 20 countries including Korea, Iran and Australia.

The competition was keen with the players going all out to clinch top honours for their countries and themselves. Some of them, who were not title contenders, used the opportunity to assess their own standards.

Singapore fielded good mixed of players – some for experience while others for the medals.

Joyce Lim justified her selection for the trip by clinching the gold medal. In the process, she dismissed strong challenges from two Malaysian and one Australian opponents.

Also doing us proud were Lanetar Quek, Chew Kai Jun and Shafinas Bte Abdul Rahman. They finished second in their respective categories.

While Lanetar and Shafinas had to overcome two opponents each to reach the finals, Kai Jun had to beat four players for the same spot. He also had the distinction of extinguishing the hopes of a determined, fast and powerful Korean player in the semi-final.

In the finals, Lanetar lost to Australia, Kai Jun to Iran and Shafinas to Korea. They gave their opponents a run for their money. But their occasional lapse of concentration proved to be their undoing.

Singapore also collected eight bronze medals through Dave Ang , Keith Ong, Wesley Ong, Vincent Lim, Patrick Wong, Charlotte Tang, Tessa Tang and Zakirah Bte Zakaria.

The Singapore contingent was headed by Tan Cheng Hui as the Team Manager. He was assisted by the coach, Khor Huat Peng.Said Mr Tan: “I would like to put on record my thanks to the Management Committee for giving our players the opportunity to compete and making the trip possible.  Most of all, I would like to thank all the accompanying parents for their support which had made my job that much easier.”

National Kyorugi Referees Updated

0

30 national kyorugi referees attended the Annual Referees’ Seminar and Assessment on 1 July 2007 at the National Training Centre.

The primary objectives of the seminar are to update kyorugi referees on the latest development of the sport and keep them abreast of the latest changes in competition rules and regulations.

The programme covered both theory and practical. The theory section comprised rule interpretations and officiating guidelines. For the practical session, the participants practiced hand signals, using the electronic scoring system and judging.

While the referees had quite a bit to remember in terms of the changes, the important message that they took home with them was: Referees have a heavy responsibility as they have an impact on the lives of others.

They were also made to realize that being humans do not give them an excuse to make mistakes.

The following referees who had successfully completed seminar had their refereeing licences renewed for another year.

New Rule Interpretations for National Championships

For the National Championships on 11, 12, 25 and 26 August 2007, the latest rule interpretations will be used. The adoption of the new guidelines will improve the transparency of the competition.

Club representatives will be briefed on the changes on 22 July 2007 immediately after the Annual General Meeting at the National Training Centre. Team Managers and Coaches who wish to participate in the briefing are advised to attend the meeting as their club representatives or observers.

It will also be a good opportunity for them to clarify any doubts they may have regarding the coming Championships.

If any Team Managers or Coaches are unable to attend the meeting, they may consult kyorugi referees who have attended the annual referees’ seminar and assessment conducted on 1 July 2007 to find out about the changes.
