Poomsae Course for Blackbelt Holders

0

The next poomsae coach course will be held on 25 February 2007 from 9.00am to 5pm at the National Training Centre.  It is open to holders of 1st dan and higher.

The course fee is $50 per participant.

Participants who successfully complete the course will be awarded qualification certificates – either Level 1 or Level 1 (Provisional).

We encourage all blackbelt holders to attend the course if they have not done so as only holders of poomsae coach certificates are allowed to coach at STF-organised or STF-sanctioned championships and participate in the National Poomsae Referee Course.  It will also be to their advantage if they want to compete in poomsae tournaments or go for higher dan gradings.

Coaches, who do not have the qualification, are advised to attend the course as the new poomsae movements will be implemented from the April 2007 centralised grading.  It will be good if they can upgrade themselves for their students.

The application form is attached and the closing date for submission is Friday 16 February 2007.

Employment Opportunity

0

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) would like to start a database of qualified coaches who are interested in teaching taekwondo either full-time or part-time.  It would serve as a source for the STF to select coaches for clubs or schools who request for their services. One club has sought the assistance of the STF to employ a full-time instructor, aged 24 to 30, with at least a 1st dan blackbelt.  The monthly salary will be from $1250 to $2250 depending on qualification and experience.

Qualified STF blackbelt holders, who would like to be considered for the position and other future employment opportunity, are requested to complete the attached form and return it to the STF Secretariat by 9 February 2007.

New Training Scheme

0

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) and the Tampines North CC met on 5 October to develop a new scheme for junior players.  It gave birth to the STF-Tampines North Training Scheme.

The scheme with the primary objective of nurturing young talents available in the Tampines North constituency was launched on 16 December 2006.  It attracted 30 participants.  After four weeks into the scheme, the number increased to 55.  This certainly augurs well for the scheme.

Two sisters, Charlotte and Tessa Tang, were among those selected for the scheme.  They were picked because of their achievements in the recent National Championships and other competitions.

Their father, Mr Darren Tang, said: “The training is beneficial to not only the participants but also the STF. It allows the organisation to spot the next generation of players.

“I am glad that the scheme is especially for young talents.”

The scheme is still open to any taekwondo exponents who have aspirations to represent Singapore in future.  They must be residents of Tampines GRC and members of clubs affiliated to the STF.

Anyone who qualifies and is interested in joining the scheme may contact Mr Lim Keng Leong, the co-ordinator and coach of the the scheme, at 90288219.

The national taekwondo demonstration team provided a visual thrill for spectators in the Martial Arts Nite held on 17 December 2006 at Tampines North CC.

The large crowd including the guest of honour Mr Mah Bow Tan, Minister for Natonal Development, was treated to some exciting performances from the various martial arts groups including Wushu and Silat.

As usual the taekwondo performers did the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) proud with their scintillating performances which drew resounding applause from the spectators.

The STF was happy to contribute to the event which was organized to showcase the various martial arts.

Joy of Teaching

All coaches who are involved in the taekwondo programme at Assisi Hospice have found it touching, rewarding and enriching.  The children display not only enthusiasm but also the true spirit of a fighter.  They certainly deserve to be called taekwondo warriors.

They seem to come alive with taekwondo.  Before the sport was introduced, some of them refused to do any exercises.  A few of them preferred to do nothing.  But when it comes to taekwondo, they do not want to miss it!

Their love for taekwondo is indeed commendable.  The children deserve our respect for their determination and courage to continue training despite feeling very weak.  When they can hardly walk or stand, they train their hand techniques while sitting on a chair.  They have certainly put a lot of other taekwondo exponents to shame for giving all kind of trivial excuses for not training.

The coaches enjoy teaching them and are touched to receive a card, which is reproduced above,  from them.  As the taekwondo programme at the Hospice is sponsored by the STF, the message is for all members of the organization.

Special Training Programme for Students

0

On 1 December 2006, 50 students from Temasek Junior College, Serangoon Junior College, Jurong Junior College and Hwa Chong Institute congregated at the National Training Centre.

The purpose of the gathering was to provide an opportunity for participants from the different schools to learn from each other and pick up new techniques and tactics from the coach.

The programme arranged by Ms Lee Yen Yen was conducted by former national coach G. Rajendran.

The participants reciprocated Rajendran’s enthusiasm to share his knowledge with their eagerness to learn.  All in all, it was a rewarding session for the participants.

A Tournament Everyone Enjoys

0

The 2nd Hwarang Tournament sanctioned by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation turned out to be better than the first despite it being organized during the school holidays

The event staged on 16 December 2006 at Maris Stella High School attracted 150 participants from 19 schools.  They competed against each other for honours in 3 categories – sparring, pattern and ‘tkd challenge’.

The ‘tkd challenge’ required the participants to perform skills that tested their endurance, speed, power and versatility.

Said Leonard Wee, Chairman of Maris Stella High Taekwondo Club: ”The ‘tkd challenge’ can be considered a mini-marathon.  It was quite tough as the participants needed to have a lot of stamina to compete successfully in the category.”

Despite the keen competition, sportsmanship and friendship prevailed.  Each performance was greeted with loud applause from everyone.  While the competition was in progress, those who were not involved took the opportunity to make new friends.

At the end of the tournament, Leonard said: “The tournament was a huge success and everyone had a great time.  Given the strong support from the various schools, we are confident that next year’s tournament will be bigger and better.”
