Another Successful Outing at the Canada Open

Singapore players showed that they were a force to be reckoned with when they produced another outstanding result at the Canada Open with 4 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals.

Chelsea Sim stamped her supremacy in the Female Under 30 Individual Division by clinching the gold medal beating world bronze medalist Carissa Fu. Diyanah Aqidah was not far behind with a bronze medal. Fu finished 5th in the event.

Woon Yong Chuang finished top in the Male Under 40 Individual Division, beating competitors from USA, Canada and Australia.

Dr Ho Mun Wai and Sister Linda Sim paired up to win a silver medal in the Over 30 Pair Division. The gold medal was won by USA comprising world silver medallist Pok Sun Yang and bronze medalist Thoa Nguyen. The bronze went to Australian pair, Sarah Upton and Carmelo Tarascio.

Dr Ho and Sister Linda also won a silver and gold medal respectively in their individual events.

In the Female Team Under 30 Division, Chelsea Sim, Tow Lee Ting and Diyanah Aqidah, beat the trio from Canada to secure the gold medal.

Our lone ranger in Kyorugi, Ng Ming Wei, won a silver medal in the Male Under 58kg. Enroute to the final, Ming Wei who was unseeded, disposed number one seed, Liam Bette from Guyana, in the quarter-final and number five seed, Jorge Ramos from Chile, in the semi-final.

It was a nail bitting final which saw number two seed Bernardo Norzagaray-Garcia from USA and Ming Wei going point for point. A lapse in concentration in the 3rd round allowed the Amercian to land a head kick on Ming Wei. Ming Wei tried to recoup the points deficit but was beaten by the bell. The final score was 25-28 and he had to settle for the silver. Nonetheless, Ming Wei should be proud of his outstanding performance.

STF President, Mr Milan Kwee, was in Montreal for the Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships and Canada Open to support our players in their pursuit for sport excellence.
