The workshop is open to red (senior and junior), poom and black belt holders.  Senior Red 1 and black belt holders are reminded that they will be required to recite the STF pledge at the end of the workshop.

The primary objective of the workshop is to point out to participants their performance flaws and the areas they should work on from the examiners’ perspective.  This will give the candidates a better chance of passing.

During the workshop, participants will be briefed on the grading guidelines and the expectations of the examiners.

Coaches may use the information acquired by their students at the workshop as a basis to guide them for their grading.

All candidates who have attended the workshop are reminded to submit a copy of the certificate of participation with their grading applications.

For red (junior) and 1st poom candidates, a copy of the certificate should be attached to their grading cards.  This is necessary for the examiners to give them special consideration, if required.

The registration form is available in the Forms folder.

Grading Matters

0

The STF has received numerous feedbacks regarding the poor scheduling of its grading exercises.  After investigation, it was discovered that most of time the problem is a result of instructors asking their students to report for grading too early and occasionally examiners giving too many candidates opportunities to repeat their performances.

In order to avoid complaints, the STF is appealing to instructors not to ask their students to report too early for grading.  Depending on the size of your group, 1 or slightly more hours before the appointed time will be sufficient.  More importantly, instructors must keep the parents informed of your grading plan – for example, report at the venue at, say, 9am for roll call and warming-up, 9.30am for collection of grading cards and other administration work, 9.50am for reporting at the grading station and 10am for assessment.

For repeat performances, the STF has decided that henceforth the examiners will assess the candidates once they complete performing their poomsae.  Candidates will be allowed to repeat only if they are unable to complete their poomsae.  Each candidate will be given two chances for repeat performance.  The examiners will provide their comments in brief at the end of each club grading, if necessary.

It will also be helpful to the grading process if instructors can gather candidates with medical condition to be graded in the same group if they hold the same grade.

Future High Performance Players

The dwindling strength of our national squad was a cause for concern especially when it was challenging to source for quality players.  Over the years, we had identified a number of potential players and almost all of them could not commit to a 12-hour training week.

Speak to any international competitors and they would tell you that 12 hours of training a week was grossly inadequate for the preparation of athletes to compete in the increasingly demanding international tournaments.

Therefore, we were pleasantly surprised that in our invitation to join the national squad last year attracted a credible number of players.  Among them were national champions Nicole Ng, Nicholas Khaw and Germaine Ng , just to name a few. Nicholas, who trains with the squad 6 times a week, finished 5th in the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships held in November 2018 in Chinese Taipei.

In order to widen the base of high performance players, we will allow players to continue training with their clubs after being selected to the national team.  They will, however, be required to join the national team training occasionally for the building of team spirit.

Hopefully, this new format will encourage clubs to develop their own stable of elite players.  Clubs who wish to have their elite students train under them after the selection will have to submit to the national coach their training schedule and progress.  STF officials shall have the rights to observe them in training at their clubs.
